Design
The design of the island has been made in the 3rd period project, international artificial island 1.
Shape of the island
The shape of the island is very important. Water flows different around certain shapes. In order to cause as little erosion as possible, it must be a shape that has a rounding on each side. A circle would be the first thought here, but because the largest current comes from the northwest, we opted for an oval shape.
Harbor
The port is an important aspect of the island. Materials can be imported and exported here. Boats can sail to the surrounding wind farms from the port to carry out work there.
The entire port has a round shape. The quay is on the north side. There are 4 production halls, a storage and four cranes on the quay. The harbor entrance is 325 meters wide and has pouring stone on both sides.
We looked at open caissons for the retaining wall and the inside of the harbor. Open caissons are good for large depths and costs relatively less. But because it takes a long time to install and it is difficult to inspect, we have opted for sheet pile walls for the retaining wall and pouring stone on the inside of the harbor.
Airstrip
An airstrip is installed to reach the island via the air. This allows the staff to get on and off the island quickly.
There is also a possibility to import goods with a cargo plane.
The airstrip consists of a runway, a hangar & a taxiway to the hangar. The airstrip directed to the southwest because that is where the most wind comes from. This allows the planes to land and take off against the wind.
Power to Gas
Power to gas is divided into two areas to use of the space on the island as best as possible. And those areas are also divided into 3 areas with P2G, Torrefaction & Gasification.
Power to gas is an energy storage technique. Hereby electrical energy is converted into chemical energy in the form of gas. Because gas is a lot easier to store than electricity. With power to gas, and cells are split using electricity.
To be able to store these cells, they are combined with biocoal. The biocoal arises from Torrefaction. Storing and merging and biocoal is called Gasification.
Accommodations and facilities
The staff working on the island need a place of residence and some facilities
A shop and canteen can be located in the central building, Large meetings can also be held there. There are office buildings for IT and Logistics. And for the relaxation of the staff there is a soccer field and some tennis courts.
Nature
The nature on the island is spread over 4 areas. 2 areas between the airstrip and the accommodations. And 2 areas around the harbor. The nature reserve offers space for nature development on the island.
